Disability Ministry Book Review: Special God by Julie Melilli

“Special God” by Julie Melilli is an excellent accessible theology book to have in your home or disability ministry library.

“Special God” by Julie Melilli

I first heard about “Special God” from an Instagram follower and I’m so glad she shared! This book was written by a mom who wanted to find a book she could read with her daughter to teach her about God. Her daughter has developmental disabilities and had spent many years in an orphanage before being adopted by the author’s family. She desired to find a book that would explain who God was in simple and concrete terms. When she didn’t find what she was looking for, she decided to write it! And I’m so thankful she did!

I love her words in the introduction, “This book is for my daughter, but it’s also for anyone, indeed everyone, who has never heard or never fully understood this very special story of a very special God.” It truly is a book that benefits everyone because it presents deep theological truths in an easy-to-understand way.

Take a look at the Table of Contents and all of the topics included in this book:

Who is this book for?

This book is an excellent book for ministry leaders and parents. I think this book would be great for children’s ministry and special needs ministry leaders to have on hand to help give guidance on explaining theological topics.

I see this book as a resource that would be read to learners and/or used by parents and ministry leaders as a guide for discussion.

This book includes eye-catching, bold, colorful designs. It does not include visual supports for the text or illustrations.

I love that the book includes a “Words to Know” section in the book (with these words highlighted throughout the text of the book).

I hope you enjoy this book as much as I have!
