Saint Patrick’s Day & Sharing the Gospel

Happy Saint Patrick's Day!

I never really celebrated St. Patrick’s Day growing up—aside from wearing the obligatory green shirt to avoid being pinched. How about you?

Back in 2008 (how has it been 16 years??), I visited Chicago a few days before St. Patrick’s Day with my now-husband (who is originally from the Chicago area). I got to see the green river and green fountains for the first time! Here’s a throwback to college-aged Cortney in the big city. 😜

That was about the extent of my St. Patrick’s Day celebrating—until a few years ago when I started seeing it as an opportunity to disciple my kids.

The Story of Saint Patrick

Do you know the story of Saint Patrick? I am not Catholic, but I love learning about his life and legacy.

Long story short—Patrick (whose real name was Maewyn Succat) was kidnapped from his village as a teenager and taken to Ireland as a slave. During this time, he learned to trust God. Eventually, he escaped and returned home. But instead of staying, he spent years studying Scripture and became a bishop. Then, he chose to go back to Ireland—not as a slave, but as a missionary—to share the Gospel with the very people who had once enslaved him. Because of his faithfulness, many people came to know Jesus.

Using Saint Patrick’s Day to Teach About Missions

What a great way to incorporate missions and the Gospel into this holiday!

If you’d like to share about Saint Patrick with your child or students, I’ve created a FREE printable story about his life. Just print, staple, and read—or share on a screen!
