Why an Adapted Bible Curriculum

Church special needs ministry is thankfully becoming more and more prevalent in our communities.  Every time I see a conference for disability ministry or hear from a special needs ministry leader, I’m encouraged!    But just because there are more churches reaching this community than ever before, it doesn’t mean that there are nearly enough!

There’s still so much to do to make our churches accessible and welcoming to people with disabilities. For the large majority of churches, we do not see people with disabilities represented in our congregations and church families.

Why is that?  I think that for the most part, it is that the large majority of our church leaders and members have not been personally affected by disability and so the need has unknowingly gone unseen. I also think that volunteers and ministry leaders feel overwhelmed and under-equipped to meet the needs of people with disabilities.  They may be struggling to find volunteers to fill the roles they currently have- how could they possibly make a disability-specific ministry work?

But that is one reason why having an adapted Bible curriculum is so important. Because the Gospel message is for ALL people and the Great Commission instructs us to tell the story of Jesus to ALL people. Learners with disabilities are included in all!

Having a way to effectively teach and present the Gospel and the story of God to people who have a difficult time reading or understanding the Bible is so important.  We have to provide accessibility!

Having a curriculum provides guidance and helps to make that easier for volunteers and ministry leaders, and helps them know this is possible.

Disability ministry curriculum has been limited, especially for younger children. I am so excited for Awe & Wonder’s adapted Bible curriculum to launch in July 2023 to help meet this need!
